Eremo della Giubiliana***** - Ragusa

A historical site dominating the Mediterranean sea, in the midst of the pristine countryside of the Hyblean plateau. This unique property is perhaps one of the few hotels in Sicily where one truly feels the intriguing charm of this prestigious island.

Eremo della Giubiliana, a charming hotel set in a historical residence, a few kilometers south of Ragusa, to the south of Tunisi, in the Eastern Lands of a different Sicily, the one of the Hyblean plateau and pristine nature, among carob forests and stone walls. Very old thick white stone walls surround and protect the courtyards and inner structure. Its white tower stands tall and overlooks the plateau that gently slopes towards the sea and there are miles and miles of coast as far as the eye can see. Across, on clear days, which are common in these latitudes, you can see the island of Malta and the African Coast, a never-ending horizon steeped in mystique and history.

The Rooms
The estate used to be part of the old ecclesiastical feudal hold of Renna dating from the 12th century, and was an old Arab rural home (Rendet gebuni), a sort of hermitage and fortified fortress dominating the sea serving as a defensive bastion against the incursions of Barbary pirates operating under the Turkish flagship their piracy activity in the Mediterranean. The type of welcome is the one expected for an old Sicilian countryside residence, with a sober and refined service that will immediately make you feel at home. The rooms have been converted from the monks' cells, and have all the amenities, telephone, TV, air conditioning and private bathrooms, furnished with Sicilian period furniture and original family relics that make them quite different from the usual bedroom.

The Cottages
The main part of the convent was restored respecting the original plans, taking care to preserve original materials and boasts ancient flooring in stone, pitch, and limestone.
Some of the stone cottages are restored old peasant homes dating from the 18th century, while some are new constructions built in the same style. All are fenced with typical stone walls, and have their own parking, private garden and verandah with a big stone barbecue. The interior is decorated in luxury and comes with polished white stone floors, exposed beam ceilings, stone fireplace, kitchenette, mini bar and air conditioning. Bathrooms have a large tub with windows overlooking the garden.
For the cottages, guests can choose between the usual hotel service or self-catering weekly stays, both options can avail themselves of all the services that the Eremo and its staff are happy to provide. Many cottages are also directly connected to our private runway so that pilots deciding to make a stop at the Eremo della Giubiliana can park their plane in the grass field in front of their cottage. A new hospitality concept for guests who appreciate freedom and privacy.

The Cuisine and Cooking Lessons
The cuisine, personally managed by the owners, is typical of the aristocratic landowners of the Ragusano plateau, made from products which are rigorously and organically grown in the old vegetable garden. The same care is taken with the cheeses, the pasta and bread made with their own durum semolina flour, and the focacce with mushrooms and wild vegetables that you can gather yourself.
You will have a chance to taste the best Sicilian wines directly from the cellar found in the medieval basement.
